We are finishing our first month of school and our students have established routines. The fifth graders have headed off to overnight outdoor camp, and I know they will have engaging lessons to learn about the outdoor world. This is a great time to learn more about what they can accomplish on their own, and they will make long-lasting bonds with their classmates and teachers.
The PTA organized a great social evening for us this month and students, parents, and staff “Rocked” the night way on the 19th. The PTA recently hosted a Newcomer’s breakfast for our new families and I hope that all our new families have had a chance to meet one of our experienced families to help navigate the Aldridge experience. The Grade Level Coordinators and Room Moms have been organized, and you will be hearing from them soon. I hope you take the opportunity to respond to their request for emails so they can easily communicate classroom needs directly with you.
I want to thank our SBIC members and Key Communicators for working with the school and district to plan or learn about key goals established to improve student learning. In addition to our PTA Board and volunteers, we have over 350 cleared volunteers in the Aldridge system. This is great news for our community and I appreciate your commitment to being an active member of our school community.

ELMS (English Language Made Simple) Meet and Greet
The ELMS Club is a group of parents with children in the ESL Program who meet monthly to welcome new families, learn about activities at school, and get “teacher tips” from Mrs. Watson, our ESL Teacher. The first meeting is on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, from 1:45 pm until 2:40 pm. Please come a little early to sign in at the office for a visitor’s badge. You will need your driver’s license, passport, or government-issued picture identification. The meeting is not mandatory—it is just for fun, and younger siblings are welcome.

Please remember to call the school at the ChildSafe line to report your child absent. Dial 469-752-0000 and select Option #3. Please be certain to clearly state your child’s name, homeroom teacher, grade, and reason for absence. Our school nurse, Alice Lindner RN, monitors this line each day. It is very important that you also send a signed, written note when your child returns to school. Please include your child’s name, grade, teacher’s name, and reason for absence. All absences are entered as unexcused until a note is received and Mrs. Hernandez can determine the reason for the absence.
Our Lost and Found is already very full of missing outerwear, lunch boxes and other miscellaneous items. Please label all coats and lunchboxes to help us return items to your child. Items left at Winter Break are gathered up and provided to a local charity.
School Board sets Tax Retification Election (TRE) on November 5
As you are likely aware, PISD has scheduled a Tax Rate Election to adjust tax rates to fund our schools. The election is scheduled for November 5th. I encourage all of our parents and our entire Aldridge community to become informed and vote in this important election. Information about the election can be found on the PISD website: http://pisd.edu/ . The site has a link to Frequently Asked Questions and a three-minute video that is quite informative. The site will be updated frequently.
PTA Reflections Contest
The Aldridge PTA encourages your children to participate in the Reflections program this year. Engaging in the Arts not only promotes creativity, but it also strengthens critical thinking and cognitive skills! The theme for this year is “Believe, Dream, Inspire.” The students may use their imagination to create a film, song, artwork, photograph, poem, short story, or dance routine. They may enter as many times, and in as many categories as they like, but be sure that the theme is reflected in the work! There is also a division called Special Artist that students with disabilities are eligible for. For further rules and the official entry form, see www.txpta.org. An official entry form and copy of general rules will be sent home soon. Please check the specific rules for the category on the website! The deadline is November 8, 2013, and all entries will be turned into Mrs. Vega. Please contact email@example.com if you have additional questions. We hope to see many representations of Aldridge’s creative spirit in November!
